Literacy & Reading

Improving Literacy:

Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.)

Our Role.

CforC purchased hundreds of books to enable Eastern’s ‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR) Program’ and has supported non-profit partners to support the reading and writing needs of Eastern students.

Our Impact.

  • The DEAR program helped more than 20% of students grow more than one grade level in a year.
  • 70% of tested students raised their Scholastic Reading Inventory by 50 or more points.
  • Eastern’s Read 180 Lexile growth was the second highest in DC.
Across the District of Columbia, 77% of 4th graders and 82% of 8th graders fail to read proficiently on national tests.*

Here is how you can help.

Invest.

Support reading interventions. Our partners provide proven interventions that help young readers catch-up and remain on track.

Estimated cost: Up to $50,000 per school.

Purchase books for classroom libraries & students in need. We ensure students have the books they need to succeed.

Estimated cost: No donation is too small. We work with our partners to identify schools and students in need of books.

Volunteer.

You and your staff can make a difference in as little as one hour per week.
